| One Hundred Five Years and still growing! Varnell Nursery was founded in 1901 by William Easterly and Joe Johnson. It was named Easterly Nursery at that time. Originally specializing in fruit trees, it was several years before the nursery added ornamental shubbery to their inventory. In 1905 Mr. Easterly became sole owner as Mr. Johnson sold his part and started the Johnson Cocoa-Cola Bottling Company. In 1940, Mr. Easterly's daughter, August, and her husband, John Varnell acquired the the nursery from Mr. Easterly and changed the name to Easterly-Varnell Nursery. It retained the Easterly-Varnell name until the death of William Easterly, at which time the name was shortened to Varnell Nursery. In 1977, Joe Washington purchased Varnell Nursery, which consisted of an area of two acres. Gradually Mr. Washington expanded the nursery area to thirteen acres, adding a wholesale growing operation, and a landscape design and installation division. In 1992 Mr. Tim Davis joined Varnell Nursery as a Landscape Design Specialist, and Installation Superintendent. In addition, Mr. Davis was charged with managing the nursery's expansion. In January of 2000, Mr. Davis purchased the Retail and Landscaping Divisions (Varnell Nursery) and Mr. Washington expanded the wholesale operation into Black Fox Farms. From its beginning in 1901, Varnell Nursery has evolved into one of the largest nursery centers in the tri-state area. The Company's staff, first class workmanship, commitment to quality and customer satisfaction have resulted in an enviable reputation in the area. These attributes, along with our expansive and unique plant selection, forms a strong foundation on which we continue to experience growth. |
